University Honors and Leadership Program

Introduction

Introduction

The University Honors and Leadership Program (UHL) provides students with unique learning experiences, scholarship support, and a sense of community. Students from all majors complete coursework together in small, discussion-based seminars. UHL courses have a multidisciplinary focus and explore a range of important topics. With a focus on developing skills to analyze, understand, and solve complex social problems from multiple perspectives, UHL students learn to be leaders through discussion-based classes, personal goal setting, and community engagement.

The Academic Program

Students beginning the UHL program as a first-year student complete 24-27 semester hours of coursework to be completed over three or four years. The UHL courses, when taken together, substitute for most of the CU core curriculum, not including math or lab science. Students who complete the program earn a minor in Honors and Leadership Studies. Students have one three-credit course in their first semester plus a year-long seminar. In the second year, students begin 15 credits of UHL electives, followed by a two-course senior seminar in their final year. UHL students who successfully satisfy the course and credit-hour requirements and maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher in their UHL courses will graduate with “University Honors.”

Students beginning in the UHL program as transfer and upper division students, complete 15 semester hours of coursework to be completed over two years. Students who complete the program earn a minor in Honors and Leadership Studies. Students complete nine credits of UHL courses and a two-course senior seminar in their final year.
