Ethnographic Methods Graduate Certificate
Introduction
The Anthropology Department’s Certificate in Ethnographic Methods provides graduate students with a skillset in ethnographic methods and an understanding of contemporary critiques of the politics of knowledge production. Ethnography is considered the method best-suited to capturing individuals’ and groups’ perspectives, experiences, and the reasons for their behavior. Ethnographic methods are considered essential skillsets in fields like program evaluation, planning and design, public health, community organizing, policy analysis, business organization and product development, and user experience research. Ethnography is widely used in disciplines such as Sociology, Geography, Political Science, Education, Ethnic Studies, and Public Health. This program will not only provide students with an understanding of the principles of ethnography and qualitative research but also with an understanding of the ethical debates it raises and a toolkit of other inductive approaches.

Declaring this Certificate
After completion of the required courses, students currently enrolled in a MA program must print and attach the completed Graduate Certificate Completion Form to an unofficial transcript. These documents should be submitted to Dr. Jamie Hodgkins at Jamie.Hodgkins@ucdenver.edu by the deadline to submit applications for candidacy of the semester in which you intend to graduate. (Deadlines vary each semester but are on census date). If the application is approved, a certificate will be mailed to the student after final grades are posted for the semester.
Non-Degree Seeking Application Procedures:
Those who wish to complete the Graduate Certificate in Ethnographic Methods as a non-degree student must apply here. After an application for admission has been approved, students will be able to enroll for the certificate courses.
These program requirements are subject to periodic revision by the academic department, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences reserves the right to make exceptions and substitutions as judged necessary in individual cases. Therefore, the College strongly urges students to consult regularly with their Anthropology advisor to confirm the best plans of study before finalizing them.
